I like junk food. I particularly like junk food that comes to me in a packet that I can rip open and stick my face in. I’m lazy with cooking. If it’s not essential, I’m not cooking it. I would live off Coco Pops and Marmite on toast if I could. So what the devil am I doing in the kitchen making cupcakes? I have no idea. It could be something to do with the Ace of Cakes binge I’ve been on, sitting in front of the telly for months on end drooling at the sight of cakes that look like ships and castles and hamburgers and WHAT THE CRAP THERE’S FIRE COMING OUT OF THAT CAKE. Or perhaps it’s something to do with wanting to be a mad scientist, and not being allowed anywhere near real chemicals. So I’m baking. And I’m starting with my one true love… Batman. LET’S MAKE BAT CAKES.

Here’s the recipe I used, credit to Good To Know Recipes. However, I did not (at this point) have any scales or any kind of measuring device so I literally just winged it.

MEASURING’S FOR SQUARES.

For the cupcakes:
120g butter
150g caster sugar
Grated zest of 1 lemon
2 large eggs
200g self-raising flour
1tsp baking powder
125ml milk

For the white chocolate buttercream:
120g butter, softened
200g icing sugar, sifted
50g white chocolate, melted

You’ll also need:
12-hole muffin tin
12 cupcake cases

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 180˚C/350˚F/gas 4. For fan ovens like mine, drop it to about 160˚C or they’ll burn. Pop your cases in your muffin tin ready to receive the goods.

Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. I don’t have a whisk, so I just use my hands to mush it all together. BECAUSE I’M METAL. Then throw in the lemon zest.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each one. A fork will do if you haven’t got a whisk, put your back into it.

Add about half your flour. Most recipes tell you to sieve it but I don’t half a sieve and IT DOESN’T EVEN MATTER, CAKE SNOBS. Just do it. Add half the milk and ‘fold in’ – I don’t know what this even means. Just mix it in, man.

Add the rest of the flour and the milk. Oh, and the baking powder. Mix.

It should now look like cake mix, thick and gooey and delicious. If it doesn’t you’ve done something wrong. LOLOOPS. The recipe doesn’t call for it but vanilla is the man so put some vanilla in there. About three drops? I don’t really measure it. You can never have too much vanilla. Disclaimer: Don’t put the whole thing in there, that would probably taste rank. VANILLA.

Spoon your mix into the muffin cases to about ¾ of the way to the top. If you over-fill these bad boys, you’ll end up with a weird slab of cake as they all spill into each other and make cake love.

The recipe says bake for 18 minutes but my golden rule is ‘Just keep checking.’ Sit in front of the oven if you have to. Trust me, burning your cakes after all that effort will make you cry. Let them cool before you put the icing on.

ICING!

Melt your white chocolate. I’m not sure what the ‘right’ way to do this is, but I just stuck it on the hob on a really low heat and stirred it constantly so it didn’t stick to the pan or burn. Let it cool for a bit.

Cream your butter and icing sugar together in a bowl. Again, use your hands if it’s easier. Who cares, as long as they’re clean and it gets the job done!

Mix in the white chocolate. Mmmmmmm.

Squeeze in some lemon juice from the leftover lemons if you like. Or some vanilla. OR BOTH. LET’S DO IT.

The recipe didn’t call for this either but we’re making Batman cakes, yeah? Go and get a bottle of yellow food colouring. You usually get in them in little 40g bottles (ish). USE HALF OF IT. Yeah, I’m being serious.

Spread your glorious Batman-yellow buttercream icing on your cakes. We could mess around with piping bags but that’s too much effort. Just spread it on with a knife or something.

For the bats you’ll need some black sugarpaste. You can get a 250g slab of it for like £1.50 off the internet, it’s great stuff. Start off by making your bat-shaped template. I went for the Arkham City style logo to celebrate the release of the new game (yes, I’m that lame). Use a small pair of scissors to cut out your bat shape out of some card. I used an old Coco Pops box, but something a little thicker but have done the job better. AND NOW WE CARVE. Grab a lump of sugarpaste, roll it out on your counter to about ½ a centimetre thick. Pop your cardboard template on your rolled out sugarpaste and carve around it with the smallest, sharpest knife you have. Et voila! Black sugarpaste bat. Pop that on your iced cake and you’re done. I won’t lie, the sugarpaste bats are a TOTAL pain in the arse and will make you want to throw your sugarpaste at the wall. But persevere, and you might end up with a batch of awesome cakes that look something like this…

The verdict?

The flavours balanced really well and the white chocolate frosting was just divine. The cakes were soft and moist inside. Perfect. Ohhhhh >_< -Cakegasm- And come on, the recipe wasn’t that difficult or time-consuming either. Definitely give it a go. Though the sugarpaste bats were a little sloppy in places, for a first attempt I was super chuffed with how these came out!

Next time: Triforce Cupcakes

The World is Saved is the new epic song and anthem for video game fans. This collaborative effort from IGN’s Podcast Beyond community came about when IGN’s own Ryan Clements pulled together a small team of volunteers to animate a video to go along with Danny Wiessner’s latest single for Podcast Beyond Episode 200 in which the video made it’s debut.

The song tells the journey of gaming and everything that goes along with it, that can be summed up with the awesome line:

At the end of it all
gamers play what we play
not for GAME OVER
but rather for what we take away!

After a long while of all Ultimate Spider-Man comics being branded with a “The Death of Spider-Man” banner, in issue 160 we finally got to see how this mysterious enigma of a storyline ended. SPOILERS Completely unknown to everyone reading the comic series at the time, with the previously stated huge, contrasting “The Death of Spider-Man” banners across the top, it came as a huge shocker when Spider-Man kicked the alternative universe bucket.

"Don't worry Aunt May, I'm sure Peter will be back in time for issue 200"

However rather than doing the typical stylings of the ‘Actual’ Marvel universe, Earth-616, in which the killing of a character is generally a temporary measure to create the closure of a poorly selling series, Ultimate Spider-Man is marching forward, leaving Peter Parker’s cold corpse behind, and relaunching with a new series in September with a brand new Spider-Man.

The new Spider-Man in the Ultimate universe is a half-black, half-Hispanic teen named Miles Morales, and the comic book reading community jumps back about 60 years in racial tolerance.

The internet went slightly crazy, with forums and boards buzzing with outrage. Phrases such as “I’m not racist but…” were used to cover blatant racism and fooled nobody. Hell, even Glenn Beck decided he needed to throw in his two cents, which shows he has clearly never read a comic book in his life or done any research of the topic before talking about it, as shown in the video of this link.

Now we all know Glenn Beck is a flag waving, apple pie eating, ignorant idiot who would use any piece of news to create sensationalism but I have no issue with a black Spider-Man. Why?

Because Black Spider-Man can do anything White Spider-Man can.

Why in a world of super humans, mutants and weekly alien invasions is a mixed race Spider-Man deemed outrageous and wrong?

Why does a large population of the comic book reading community complain that something feels stale and when a creator, even one such as Bendis who has a pretty decent track record, decides to mix things up, every nerd, geek and comic book reader decide to throw their toys out of the pram? Change is apart of life, you dorks! (Love you really!)

If you want to read stories about Peter Parker, you’ve got him in 616, and the previous Ultimate stories are still there for you to enjoy, nobody is taking those away from you.

As much as I am invested into the character of Peter Parker, whatever the universe, a change was needed. We were getting to a point where the two commercial universes were too similar, heroes had different origins, yes, but this change has a significant impact on the universes’ storytelling.

I don’t see what the big deal about changing his skin colour is. It would make no difference if you changed his skin colour, creed or sexuality – as long as the character’s ideologies are the same he’s still Spider-Man, he’s still that icon.

And for the love of Odin, if you’re screaming to the heavens that this is an “outrage” as I always say “vote with your wallet.” If you don’t agree with a product, don’t buy it. There is no point in moaning on the internet that you don’t like the way a product is being made and then buy the product you supposedly hate, it’s counter productive. If you continue to buy the product regardless, the maker will just make more.

So what do you think? Are you going to stop buying Ultimate Spider-Man? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

Since Disney bought out Marvel and Pixar some time ago, the colossal fanboy in me has been dying for some sort of announcement of these two behemoths of popular entertainment doing a team up project of visual spectacle. But alas, every word of Pixar studios picking up a spandex wearing superhero movie has been down played, Pixar have gone on record to say that “they’ve done superheroes” and have not got any Marvel character projects in the works. So things look grim on the superhero front. But this doesn’t stop the want for a Marvel/Pixar combo at all, if anything it makes me want it even more, because I am fundamentally a child, and I want what I can’t have. (I also tend to want something if it’s mine anyways, I haven’t played with it for a while and then you, of all people, show interest in it, then I want it again, that’s just how I roll)

So after much thought I created a set of guidelines to think of even remotely possible projects. This way all my picks don’t sound like complete random fanboy-ism and it has structure, it also makes me feel a bit better about myself, but that’s not the point.

RULES

The rules are pretty simple and state:

A movie cannot be made if the character’s licence belongs to a production company that is not Disney. (So Spidey, X-Men and The Fantastic Four are out the hypothetical window)

As Pixar are, at heart, a family friendly studio, movies with content that would require anything more than a 12A (PG13) won’t happen. (So no Punisher or Moon Knight then)

Them the rules, nothing too restrictive and easy to work around. Let’s get to the picks.

Doctor Strange

As of yet, Pixar has yet to focus the main theme of its movies on magic and what better introduction to a mainstream audience could the very own Sorcerer Supreme receive. Starting with his origin and the car crash, that would probably be changed for a Disney audience, but then to have Strange search for his mentor, the Ancient One, in the Himalayas, his training and eventual understanding of the mystic arts. Build it up to the final battle with the Lord of the Dark Dimension Dormammu and you have a movie, one that stands up to the live action universe and offers something not yet seen. Every step stands to have an excellent story telling and visual premise that’s on a huge scale. As story goes, Doctor Strange is very Pixar, a story about a once selfish man, not caring for anyone but himself, having everything taken away from him, being re-built as a decent person and then into a hero.

Iron Fist

Let Dreamworks have their Kung Fu Pandas, Marvel has its own martial arts expert at hand, one that with a few changes is a perfect movie for Pixar to produce. A story about a young Daniel Rand in NYC, having everything given to him by his wealthy father to having his family and loved ones taken away from him by a murder covered up as an accident on an expedition to the city of K’un-L’un, which Danny’s father had found as a child. A plot in which the protagonist trains in the ways of the martial arts to get vengeance for his father’s death and the falls into the role of a hero, screams Disney magic. A movie which would have martial art actions scenes, dragons, New York City, mystical cities and cameos by the likes of “Powerman” Luke Cage and Misty Knight? One question. Where do I sign up?

Avengers Academy/Young Allies/Youth in Revolt

My insane love affair with Avengers Academy continues! But why not have a movie focused on the younger heroes? As the class seems a little small, add the characters from Paul Tobin’s Young Allies to the mix to create a more diverse cast. The character list in these two books adds up to a story which can be funny, full of action, have a message (most likely the “you’re not broken and you’re not alone” vibe) and will appeal to kids. Focus on one or two origins of the kids to add some but not too much back story and probably have Reptil be your narrator to keep things flowing. Keep most of the movie set in the school, focus on the character development and the lessons they are learning, with their final test at the climax. Have some interaction from the teachers, but the kids should steal the show, and leave the whole Penance self harming part out, that would just get everyone down.

Now I know I made the rules up, and listen, rules should be stuck to. That’s a lesson we teach here at Alternative Spotlight. But I just want to break the rules for a split second and have a bit of inane nerd speculation that means nothing.

Could you imagine if Pixar went balls out and made…

I know this violates EVERYTHING Disney/Pixar are about. But man, if we got an accurate re-telling of the Marvel Zombies story in glorious Pixar quality CGI, I would find the people responsible and kill them just so the equilibrium in Hollywood is maintained. A Marvel Zombies movie is probably the last thing that would ever happen. But a geek can dream right?

What Marvel movies would you love to see Pixar make?

This is a video that I love so very much and one that really speaks for itself.

Menomena are one of a billion indie bands out of Portland, Oregon, and whilst I never got on with all their music, this is just a perfect mix of sound and vision. Over the past 3 or so years I’ve found myself coming back to it time and time and time again. I’ve searched high and low for a true HD version of it but to no avail, so sadly this is the best we have for now.

If you know me then I’ve either spammed this video to you on blogs or IM or email or one social networking site or another, or I’ve made you put it on at that perfect time of the night.

Menomena – Evil Bee. It’s a keeper.

There have been a lot of announcements lately about Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and I feel it’s not getting enough attention!

This could be because The Hobbit has been too long in the making. It’s been a good few years, with Peter Jackson dropping out, Del Toro taking the reins and then relinquishing them again. Yet the films are now in full flow and over the past few weeks, exciting images have been released!

The cast was actually announced a few months back, and was exciting at the time, but again, I feel lacked the excitement it deserved. As ever with Jackson, the actors involved are a lot more exciting if you’re British, with some wonderful cult actors like Aidan Turner of Being Human fame featuring heavily. Fancy seeing Aidan as a dwarf? Well now you can.

And when it comes to the English actors, well, they’re everywhere to be seen. Thinking about it actually, I can’t think of an American in the entire film… Martin Freeman as Bilbo was genius from the start, Ian McKellen as Galdalf (anyone else would have caused uproar me thinks…) and Stephen Fry as the Master of Laketown. Laketown doesn’t actually appear until the second half of the original story, so maybe we’ll have to wait until 2013 (and the second part of the film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again) to see him!

However, alarm bells have gone off. I personally trust Jackson to do what he wants as he did such a good job with Lord of the Rings, however when you notice that certain actors names have appeared on the IMDB cast, such as Orlando Bloom and Christopher Lee, you can understand the concern. Bloom and Lee’s characters don’t appear in novel. It’s clear that Jackson is taking a few liberties with the story in order to throw in a couple of characters to make the transition between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings a smooth one. Having done some research though, Bloom is apparently only in the film for a couple of minutes. A brief cameo from a character who is, admittedly, immortal, and so could conceivably be around during the events of The Hobbit.

Yet Lee and Bloom aren’t the only Lord of the Rings actors returning to their roles. We’ll be seeing Cate Blanchett again (once again, immortal, acceptable…) but more interestingly, Elijah Wood as Frodo and Ian Holm as Bilbo will be appearing. One can only presume that there will be a jump forward in time, most likely at the end of the second movie. A nice touch if that’s the case.

On a final note though, and maybe just exciting for me and a few others I can think of, a certain BBC star will be featuring. Cumberbatch, star of BBC’s Sherlock will be voicing Smaug the dragon and also a character referred to as the ‘Necromancer’. A character briefly mentioned in The Hobbit and is basically Sauron before he becomes, well, Sauron. An interesting thing for Jackson to include, but I suppose having decided to make it into two films, he needs as much material as possible! Such liberties will either make The Hobbit a modern masterpiece, or potentially dilute what was a strong story in its own right.

Okay, I’ll just go ahead and say it. I liked Campus. In fact, I really liked Campus. From the writers behind sketch show Smack The Pony and hospital-sitcom classic Green Wing, Campus had massive shoes to fill. Initial reception of the show was painful, with critics left and right declaring it the immature pubescent little brother of Green Wing, slamming it for both its similarities and differences from the show. Sure, Channel 4′s advertisements in the run-up to the first episode made the Green Wing link its major selling-point and perhaps this hype was a little too much to handle, but is it really necessary to make such comparisons? Okay, so both shows focus on two marvellouly dysfunctional instituions and revolve around the relationships between the people inside of them, but what sitcom doesn’t?

The main focus of the show is the story of aging philanderer Professor Matt Beer and the painfully shy but delightful maths lecturer Imogen Moffat. The characters have often been accused of being one-dimensional and weak, and I can understand why people that gave up after the first episode would think so. The one annoying thing about Campus is that it is very slow to start. There are so many characters to introduce and tone-setting going on that the writers didn’t quite achieve to make the characters relateable enough in the first episode, meaning most audiences just didn’t want to invest any more time in the story. Over the course of the series though, most of the characters show a lot more depth and manage to develop amidst all the surrealism – Even “fossilised seducer” Matt Beer, whose mini breakdown in the final episode is exucted brilliantly. As an awkward maths geek with “limbs everywhere like a sexy game of Kerplunk” myself, perhaps I identify a little too much with Imogen and her bumbling interactions with other human beings, but there really is something quite identifiable about her trials and tribulations with Matt. After all, what woman on this earth hasn’t found a soft spot for a bad boy at least once in her life, desperate to peel away the layers and uncover something previously unseen? There’s something quite Shakespearean about the two, something that tells us that it will never be simple. Beer himself puts it more eloquently than I ever could (being a numbers girl and all): “We’re destined to clash, you see, that’s all. Words and numbers, you see, like fire and ice, order and chaos. Occassionally one of us gets the sweaty upperhand but we’re basically locked in wirthing sexy mortal combat for the rest of our days.” And with the way things are left in the final episode, that will most definitely be the case. That said, there are some really tender moments between the two when Matt manages to control himself long enough to play nice and not “ruin a good thing.” The dance around the courtyard to David Bowie’s Suffragette City is one of my favourites, though some of the scenes between unhappily-engaged accountant Jason and stupid-but-sweet “gay” accomodations officer Nicole do much better at portraying the most genuine moments in the show. There are some great characters in the series, including Andy Nyman’s power-crazy (and I really do mean crazy) vice chancellor Jonty de Wolfe, despite being overly racist at times. Nyman is a brilliant character actor and you can really tell how much fun he has with the multitude of opportunities that Jonty’s role brings. In fact, Campus is quite charming in the sense that it really does look like it was heaps of fun to film, and the semi-improvised nature of the script allows for some of that playfulness to shine through.

Many critics complained about the choice of setting, grumbling that the campus location has no parallels to draw from familiar nuggets of television as Green Wing did from hospital dramas at the time. Sure, Green Wing worked fantastically as a parody of these shows in many ways but that wasn’t the part that made it so great. It was the sharp humour and surrealism that integrated so well into the dreariness of working life that made Green Wing so enjoyable, and that is definitely something which carried over into Campus. That said, the humour is more abrasive and even offensive at times. But I don’t think that’s always a bad thing. The Campus writers have upped their game this time round, with more shock tactics, toilet humour and dick jokes than ever before. And in my opinion, they pull it off with style. Some critics have suggested that the show would have been more interesting had it focused on the students instead of the staff, which is something that really does make my toes curl. Had Campus gone down the easy route and focused on the student body, we would have ended up with something like Skins: The Uni Years. I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough of the angsty teen comedy drama where everyone parties harder than they study and has some kind of underlying mental disorder that’s exploited for the purposes of entertainment. Sure, some of the dialogue could have been something right out of The Inbetweeners – “I’m literally foaming at the gash,” anyone? – but I don’t have to sit through another painful gross-out scene of a teenage boy doing something hideous with his winkle. Campus even seems to poke fun at these kinds of shows with little tongue-in-cheek segments like the one in which all of Imogen Moffat’s class annouce that they have chlamydia. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I think Campus brings something to the table that we haven’t seen before, and it does it in a way that doesn’t make me want to shake my walking stick at the TV.

On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed Campus. Though a bit slow to start, the cast gel more and more as the series goes on, creating some really fantastic moments, both funny and touching. Yes, it was made by the creators of Green Wing, but that doesn’t mean that it has to undergo such harsh scrutiny. Green Wing was cancelled for a reason. Sure, there are parallels, but Campus does something that Green Wing didn’t. Campus fuses surrealism, love stories and offensive humour in equal measures, and I think it does a bloody good job of it. Though the initial viewing figures weren’t all that great, I really hope some of you pick up the DVD and get on it because it really is a marvellous 6 hours of entertainment (if you stick with it and aren’t easily offended). After seeing how much the first series progressed, I think a second series could have a lot of potential. And judging by the cliff-hanger in the final episode, it looks like the creators of Campus have big plans for the show. Fingers crossed, eh?

You can still catch the entire first series on 4OD or go ahead and buy the DVD on Amazon for £12. The DVD also comes with a nice behind-the-scenes feature and some deleted scenes. Get involved!

Come September, DC Comics will press the restart button on the entire DC universe. With the conclusion of Flashpoint, DC will start anew with fifty-two, yes fifty-two, brand new series all starting at issue one and going day and date digital release. Obviously news like this tends to cause a little bit of backlash, so here at Alternative Spotlight we decided to not take to the forums and burn them all down with our flaming fanboy rage, we thought Adam and Simon would have a gentlemanly discussion instead.

But first, let’s see what we are dealing with.

Simon

Currently reading (comic book wise) – Oddly nothing current. Working through some things I’ve missed over the years. Currently reading the reimagining of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Neverwhere’.
Favourite Series – Preacher. Always and forever. The best comic series that was ever written (and mostly likely ever will be!)
Writer that can do no wrong – Neil Gaiman

Adam

Currently reading (comic book wise) – I’m a little bit of a Marvel zombie. The current most notable titles I’m reading right now are Amazing Spider-Man, all the Avengers titles, Avengers Academy, Uncanny X-Force, Deadpool and Uncanny X-Men.
Favourite Series – I am loving Avengers Academy and Uncanny X-Force at the moment but will always go with Amazing Spider-Man.
Writer that can do no wrong – I’m going to be cheap and go with three: Matt Fraction, Christos Gage and Rick Remender.

1. What do you think of the DC reboot at a consumer level?

Simon: On a consumer level it’s obviously going to split people down the middle. I was a MASSIVE fan of Marvel’s ‘reboot’ (though it wasn’t an entire one). The Ultimate comics were an opportunity for me to throw myself into a universe where I knew EVERYTHING that was going on, and that’s a nice feeling. I hope to get the same buzz from the DC reboot. The DC universe has so much history and mythology behind it. Sometimes it can get confusing. This is an obvious way to solve that issue and make the whole lot accessible again. However… 52 titles?!?! What the hell?!?! That’s way too many. They’re trying to solve one issue and failing miserably. Within months, the DC universe is going to be as confusing as it ever was, no-one is going to be able to afford/have the time to keep up with every series, and there will always be crossovers that make you go ‘Huh? Who the hell is that?!’ They should have done what Marvel did and kept it simple. The main characters get their own series (Supes, Wonderwoman, Batman) and done a Justice League one to start. That REALLY would have made the new universe accessible. Then as time went on, GL and co could get their own issues. It’s going to get confusing, and there seems to be an ongoing thing with big events in comics at the moment in that they never stick to their guns. They kill someone off, they always come back, something big happens that changes everything, and they do something to reverse it all. My money? I wouldn’t be surprised if in 12 months time, everything’s gone back to exactly how it was, or at least, we’ll find out that there’s still the original earth floating out there somewhere…

Adam: I’m with Simon on the whole splitting people down the middle thing. I can see fans being upset that the stories and mythology that they have been told for years and years is now irrelavent and is now contained in its own little bubble, however I kind of like that. Those stories are still there, the Batman stories you love are not going anywhere. Besides that, fifty-two titles is insane for what in the grand scheme of things is a new launch. Even if you stuck to just to say buying every title in the Batman and Green Lantern lines, which are the hot properties right now, at launch you are looking at buying around eleven books. Again, I agree somewhat with Simon that a really focused launch would have been fantastic and would have encouraged new readers to jump on, but flooding the market with this number of titles just makes it as daunting as it ever was.

2. What do you think of the DC reboot at a business level?

Simon: I’m not sure how much of a good move it is at a business level. I think their readership levels won’t change much. Those who leave because of their annoyance of such a drastic change that deletes all of their well learned history, will be replaced by the hope for new intake of readers. It’ll be interesting to see the figures.

Adam: As a business move, this is DC either making the smartest move they have made in recent memory or slitting their own throats and bleeding out whilst Marvel watches with the biggest smile on its metaphorical face. As it stands Marvel owns about 50% of the entire comic books market, which is massive, and I think DC needed to make this bold move. If it pays off we will see, they have had quite a bit of mainstream media coverage but are the audiences who are absorbing mainstream media really that interested in comics?

3. Is this going to be the move that saves the comic book industry in your opinion?

Simon: Did it need saving?

Adam: In recent years the comic book industry has been on the mend, it’s not stable, but it’s getting there. Bold actions like this certainly help, especially with the forward action towards digital print, the easier it is for people to consume comics the better. I still believe that the big blockbuster movies are the easiest way to get the industry more stable, as the sales numbers prove, but they need to start advertising actual comic book series alongside these.

4. What are your thoughts on day and date digital publishing?

Simon: It’s a good move, and a logical one. The hardcore comic guys are going to be put off of digital publishing but the delay, by changing that, they’ll be cementing a few digital customers.

Adam: My main issue is the pricing, if I’m buying digitally, which is cheaper to produce, why am I paying the same amount as if I bought the physical issue? Other than that it’s the same as Simon said, the hardcore comic fans are going to be buying paper, whilst the casual reader will dip in and out by buying a few issues on their smart phone or tablet when they fancy it. I would be really interested to see the percentage split between paper and digital.

5. Will the move to day and date digital cause you to stop reading press and make the switch?

Simon: I don’t buy individual comics as it is. I always buy them in their collections, and until I buy an iPad (and that’s an IF, not a WHEN) or some other similar device, I don’t feel that I own anything that reading a comic would be enjoyable on. The digital market is still a limited one. For now.

Adam: I’m a nerd and like to own the physical copy, I like to have a bookcase full of titles, it looks nice. I’m currently selling all my singles on eBay and rebuying the arcs that stuck with me in trade paperback. I just like the feeling of holding a comic in my hands and I dont really get that reading digitally, although I do read free comics on my iPhone if I’ve got a few moments to spare and the software is great. I totally see why someone would want to read their books that way, it’s just not for me.
6. With the reboot will you be picking up any new series?

Simon: Justice League.

Adam: When it comes to DC, I can only really get into Batman. I may pick up the new Batman or Batman and Robin, as having Bruce with Damien really interests me, however I will probably just wait for the trade.

7. With the reboot will you be dropping any series you are currently reading?

Simon: Well, I’ve been dipping in and out of Green Lantern and the Justice League over the months. I’d lost track of Green Lantern as it is, so you never know…

Adam: As I only read Marvel books at the moment, I have none to drop. But I could see a lot of Green Lantern fans being pretty pissed, they have just been dragged through long events and major changes in the Green Lantern storyline, for all that just to be restarted may cause people to just give in.
So there you have it, two nerds sitting round the fire, smoking cigars and enjoying the finest scotch talking about nothing but men in tights. Hope you enjoyed the ride and feel free to give your opinion of the DC reboot in the comments below.
